Press Release: The War Ends May 20th , 2015 at 2 p.m. CEST

May 19, 2015

The battle of the sublime domain name is over! Business owners nightmares regarding cases of domain disputes, that brand-lawyers make a lavish amount of money on, has been sent off for counting. One Registry opens up for the brand new and completely empty top-level domain: .one.

Wednesday May 20th, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. CEST, an entirely new part of the Internet opens up, as it will be possible to register domain names on the new top-level domain (TLD) .one!

It is a huge challenge for companies to find a suitable domain name on one of the more known TLDs as .com and .net. With almost 120 million registered domain names under .com, the need for such a new generic TLD, is bigger than ever. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) already saw the need back in the year 2000, and extensive work has been done since then. The Internet itself is a piece of infrastructure that simply cannot be changed overnight. In 2012 it was made possible for registries to apply to drive and host one of these many new gTLDs, and One.com decided to apply for .one.

Every single day I hear from company owners with great frustration, expressing the challenge of finding a domain name for their company or product which is available. Often, a company’s name is decided on the basis of what domain name is available, not what they actually want to call their new business. We have a need for more names that are available on the Internet, and ”one” is a generic word that pairs really well as the ending for a new domain name, says COO of One Registry, Thomas Darré Medard Frederiksen.

There has been a growing number of new gTLDs, and many are already popular. Most of these TLDs though, are specific and refers to a business- or interest-area, such as .computer or .club.

With .one we get a new gTLD to buy domains on, which is generic and I know is easily comparable to other popular generic endings like .com and .net., Thomas Darré Medard Frederiksen explains.
